Importing Old Cars Into USA : How Hard is it?

When importing old cars into USA one question needs to be answered, “How hard is it?” Well, first you will need to decide if you are going to import the car yourself or hire a professional importer. If you decide to go with an importer, you need to double check that they have are a licensed DOT importer. Find out if the importer is also registered with both the DOT and the EPA.

You may be surprised that it really isn't that difficult to import a car into America yourself. If the car is over 25 years old, you will not have many problems. If you are choosing to import a car from Canada , make sure the car is older than 15 years.

This is due to Federal Law. Americans drive right handed and American cars have the steering wheel on the left. This is why cars older than 25 years are allowed for import into America . Also, you can't import cars into America that are set up for Left Handed driving, with the steering wheel on the right. You won't be able to import racing cars or prototypes.

Also, the car must have been previously registered in another country, before you are allowed to import it into America .

You will need all of the paperwork pertaining to the car. This includes the bill of sale, previous registration information. It is also helpful if you can get a manufacturer's label and have it attached to the car. Make sure the label is in the English language. This is for the Environmental Protection Agency, be sure that the label states that the car meets American emission requirements.
